Why, God?....and a Photo Challenge

I came across a question on Answerbag.com:  If you could meet one person in the whole world past, present, or future, who would you want to meet and why?

I wonder if anyone answered “God” (or Jesus).  I think if I could actually choose one person, or entity, to have a question and answer session with, it would be God.   I do know I can talk to God anytime, and I do know that He answers…but wouldn’t you like to sit down with Him and just ask some very specific questions?

I think I’d ask things about myself…like why is it that the only thing I seem to be able to finish that I start is a pack of cookies.    I’d ask how to fix my lack of self-control that gets me into trouble, or my lack of motivation.   I don’t know if I’d ask things like why He allows abuse, or why there are starving children, or why good people die of cancer and mean people live to be 90…I wonder about such things, but I don’t know if I would be able to take the answer.   I can read Job and understand that He is in control…complete control.

I seem to remember something about not asking God “Why?”

I am about to talk myself out of posting this entry.

What if you could only ask Him one question to which you could get a direct answer?     What would you ask?

I believe I would ask Him exactly how involved He is in our everyday lives.   Does He step back and let nature and life take its course, or is He intimately interested in MY life?

Clearing Up Some Misconceptions

Rock Pile - TVA Reservation - The Shoals

When Mike commented, “When I think of Alabama, I think of dust, heat, and sweat...even in the winter!  I realized there are, apparently, some misconceptions about Alabama the Beautiful.

Cane Creek Canyon - The Shoals

We do have heat.   But any Southerner knows it’s not really the heat, it’s the humidity!   At times, we are thought to be less intelligent because of our slower speech and southern accent.   It’s true that some folks in Alabama do talk funny…but that’s because they once lived in the North.   For the most part, we don’t hold it against them, though we do think some of the things they do peculiar.   For instance, they don’t wave at every car they pass on old country roads.  We southerners know it’s not only polite, but expected, that you throw up a hand or at least an index finger as you pass a car or a folks sitting out on their porches when you are in the country.

UNA Flowers - The Shoals

In the Beautiful Shoals, where I am blessed to live, we have lakes and rivers, streams and creeks, where we gather for picnics, bass tournaments and family outings.  In these same waters, we ski, sail, ride the waves on jet skis and wave runners, and bait the waters for trout or catfish, which we fry and eat!   We have farms and old barns, and green leafy fields dotted with white cotton or yellow corn silk.   We have tall, green trees, bright flowers and colorful birds.   Our beautiful skies are dotted with clouds that look like puffy, white bits of cotton stretching across a blue expanse making a comforting and pleasing contrast.    We have pink, purple and orange sunsets that are so brilliant, at times one feels the need to just stop and breathe in the wonder of God’s artistic masterpiece.

We have rain, and lots of it at times!   Our Augusts characterize the dog days of summer, but afterwards, we are rewarded with a brilliant array of reds and golds, and dazzled with the bright yellows of Fall!   Snow sometimes comes, usually only for a day or two, but it blankets us in stark white, glistening beauty when it makes its rare appearance.

Natchez Trace - The Shoals

On southward, we have Tuscaloosa, from whence “Roll Tide” echos across the nation.    We also have Auburn (try not to hold that against us!) where “War Eagle” resounds, often as loudly as the Tide.    Further on, we have our beaches, full of sand and waves and salty breezes.

The Shoals does have crime and crooks, but our crime rate is low.   We definitely have our small town politics, and we have Shoalanda to keep us informed of all things political…and other local events, happenings, and points of interest.

Wilson Dam - The Shoals

Our celebrations include the Arts Alive Festival in the spring, the Spirit of Freedom fireworks that light up our skies in July; WC Handy and Helen Keller Festivals (both Handy and Keller were born in the Shoals), the Renaissance Faire and Oktoberfest in October.   We have Founder’s Day parades and picnics, car shows and inviting parks!   Florence is the home of the beautiful campus of the University of North Alabama and Lions football.   We are the Bible Belt, our avenues are lined with churches of every denomination, all of which are friendly and helpful.    We are the places, the celebrations, the people!  We are Alabama the Beautiful, and we are blessed beyond words.

Alabama Snow!

North Alabama got 8-13 inches...depending on where you live.

My front/side yard

I didn't realize that birds didn't sink in the snow.
We threw birdseed out, and the birds had a feast!

My back yard.

I have enjoyed the snow's beauty, and I don't ever remember
having so much snow in North Alabama.
So far, I've had two days off...but I hope to go back to work tomorrow.

Snow, Y'all....in Six Words, No Less!

It's Six Word Saturday!**

Here in the Deep South, when we get a weather advisory such as this:

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE...UPDATED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE AL 249 AM CST SAT JAN 8 2011 ...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM EXPECTED TO IMPACT THE AREA SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY... .A DEVELOPING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL TRACK ACROSS THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY. THIS...COUPLED WITH A SUFFICIENTLY COLD AIRMASS IN PLACE ACROSS THE REGION AND ADVANCING GULF MOISTURE...WILL SET THE STAGE FOR A PERIOD OF WINTRY WEATHER. AT THIS TIME...IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT SNOW...HEAVY AT TIMES...WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA FROM SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS ON SUNDAY. THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY BEFORE POSSIBLY TRANSITIONING TO A MIX OF LIGHT SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN BY MIDDAY MONDAY.

…we know what to do!   Head to Wal*Mart and buy milk and bread…and toilet paper.   And eggs.   Even if we are already stocked, and even though we know our snow usually only last a day or two.   Granted, this particular threat is a little…threatier… than the normal “½ to 1 inch accumulations possible” forecasts that we get.   (yeah, I made “threatier” up.   Feel free to use it.   My spell check keeps changing it to throatier…but…I can’t come up with a use for that word!)

I was grocery shopping early this morning.   Apparently, 89% of the folks around here did their hoard-shopping last night.   No milk!   Of course, everybody at the store was just like me, “This is normally when I shop!   I really am out of all these things!”   Yeah, right.   Well, “yeah, right” for ME, but if that were true for everyone, there would still be milk in North Alabama.

Our “misplaced Yankee” friends laugh at us...after they get over being mad at us.  We know they are not laughing with us…because they are really out of milk, but there’s none available, and that’s why they’re mad.

This morning, when I first arrived at WalMart, there actually was about 5 gallons of milk.   I got one of them.    About 15 minutes later, an announcement was made over the loud speaker that they were now “well-stocked in milk.”   I took a look at the masses headed back to the dairy section…to get one of those well-stocked gallons…of which there were about 20…and about 50 people wanting a jug.

So…it’s time to charge up the camera batteries and the laptop, and make sure there’s wood on the back porch, so that when it starts to snow, we can “hunker down,” drink our milk and keep warm.

Be safe, my fellow southerners!
